Journeyman Electrician’s Exam H’orkbook Based on the 2005 NECY is designed to help test applicants prepare for the journeyman electrician ·s examination. This text/workbook is based on the 2005 National Electrical Code® . Questions on the journeyman electrician’s examination arc commonly based on electrical theory, trade knowledge, and the National Electrical Code®. This book assumes that the student has a basic understanding of electrical theory and trade knowledge.

The examples. review questions. and sample licensing exams provide practice reviewing and answering questions similar to the questions on the journeyman electrician’s examination. All review questions and sample licensing exams in Chapters 5 and 6 are timed. Test applicants should pace themselves when taking these tests in order to experience simulated test conditions.

Calculations resulting in a fraction less than .5 arc permitted to be dropped per Annex 0 of the NEC ®, Examples. For example. 16.4 A is rounded to 16 A.

The journeyman electrician’s examination may be developed locally by the authority having jurisdiction or may be developed  by an independent testing agency. Four years of work experience

in the trade is generally required to take the exam .

JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN’SEXA;EXAMIINATION

The type of wor and dutie” of a journeyman electrician are generall} detem1ined by local and state jurisdiction. The joume) man electrician usually perfcrms electrical work under the supervi..,ion of a master electrician.

The journeyman electrician’s examination consists of questions and problems prepared and administered by the local licen..,ing board. Most local examinations are given periodically at a time and place specified by the examining board. Some licensing boards adminis­ ter the test in parts, which are graded separately. Re­ quest a test breakdown when making application.

The electrical board establishes requirements of eli­ gibility of applicants for the journeyman electrician’s examination. The applicant is usually required to show four years experience in the electrical trade. Eligible applicants are administered a test to determine if they have the knowledge to perform electrical work on the journeyman level. The quality of their work must meet the requirements of local and national codes. It must be a safe electrical installation.

Applicants who pass the journeyman electrician’s ex­ amination are issued a journeyman card. The card con­ tains the name of the licensing board, the name of the cardholder, license number. expiration date, and issu­ ance date. See Figure 1-1.

Application and Examination Fees Cover letters containing general information regarding the journeyman electrician’s examination forms are usu­ ally provided by the licensing board. See Figure 1-2. Information in such cover letters may include:

• Signature and notarization required

• Type of exam i nation

• Examination preparer

• Material that may be brought to examination

• Length of examination

• Minimum passing grade

• Cost of examination

Each applicant must complete the attached application with supporting documents and

file it with this office not later than . Applications must O

be signed and notarized as indicated .Examinations are “open-book” and prepared for the PCCLB by an independent testing agency. Questions are multiple-choice . fill-in or true-false.All books and references must be brought by the examinee . No class notes, scratch paper, exam study aids or like materials will be allowed . Silent , battery-powered , non- printing calculators are permitted , and applicants must bring their own pencils , pens and rulers .

Most examinations take about six hours with a lunch break of approximately one hour. Smoking is prohibited in the examination area . A passing grade is 70%. You will be notified of your grade within 30 days. Do not ca ll the PCCLB off ice before 30 days fo r yo ur examinat i on results .

If an applicant for an original certificate does not provide a complete application with all required supplementary information within one year from the date of filing the application , the fee paid shall be credited to the PCCLB as an earned fee. A new application for a certificate shall be accompanied by another application fee.

All experience requirements must be verified on attachment B. The form may be reproduced as needed and all verifica t ion must be notarized.

Forms detailing guidelines for experience may also be provided by the licensing board. Generally, four years of work experience in the trade. under the direction of an electrical contractor or master electrician, is required for eligibility to take the journeyman electrician· ex­ amination. Partial credit may be given for military ser­ vice, school courses, and other related work experience. See Figure 1-3. Information in such forms may include

The journeyman application form contains paces for the applicant to provide the information required by the licensing board. The licensing board requires that the applicant complete the journeyman application form and pay an examination fcc. The information required will vary somewhat from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. See Figure 1-4. Generally. however. the following i required:

• Type of certificate applied for

• Personal information (address. telephone. etc.)

• Schools attended

• Employment

• Letters of reference

• Signature and notarization

Certificates in support of journeyman applicant’s expcricnce qualilications may also be required. Sec Figure 1-5. Such certifications must be made by former employ­ers licensed as contractors. The certificate contains :

• Dates of employment

• Statement of applicant’s experience

• Signature of employer

• Notarization

clip_image001[10]The licensing board generally acceph copies of your IRS W-2 form to vrify work experience. The W-2 form may be used in cases where your ex-employer is no longer in business or cannot be located.

Acceptance

Upon fullilling the requirements of the licensing board you will receive confirmation of a test date. This in­ cludes the location and time of the examination. The journeyman electrician·s examination is generally given once a month. Jurisdictions may vary. Confirm avail­ ability for testing dates with your local licensing board.

Reference Books

The licensing board usually furnishes a list of books and study aids permitted in the examination room. Books and study aids other than those listed hould be approved by the licensing board or the te ting proctor.

Amendments

The licensing board may hm·e amendments to the national Electrical Code ® . The board may add or delete sections to the NEC ®. A local test may incorporate lo­ cal amendments. When making application. request a copy of amendments and ask if they are included in the examination.

Private Testing Agencies

The licensing board may make up and administer their own examinations or use a private te ting agency. The licensing board review tests and sets the criteria for the examination. The private agency administers the test and returns the results to the licensing board.

Special Examinations

The need may arise to  havee a license as quickly as possible. The local licensing board may permit a special test. At the time of application. request this infonna­ tion. if it is necessary.
