- Should you take snoring seriously?
You might think that snoring is just a common thing that many people have a problem with. It actually does affect the person who is snoring and those sleeping in the same room. It will affect the persons lifestyle, mostly they will become fatigued during the day. It might also be a sign of a greater problem, like sleep apnea, which means you stop breathing for a few seconds during sleep. If the person is snoring louder than usual, it would be a good idea to consult a doctor. Some of these factors can be treated and some will need aids to minimise the snoring.
- What to do about the snoring?
An unhealthy lifestyle can be easily changed with a strong will power. By eating healthier and staying fit you might be able to snore less. Being overweight means that the fatty tissues attach itself all over the body. The fat particularly around the neck will make you snore while sleeping. So if you identify with this, then eating a balanced diet will be your starting point. Research has found that dairy products, large meals, soya milk, caffeine and sleeping pills also increase the chances of snoring. These are simple things you can cut out on top of your balanced diet.
A blocked nose, sinus or deviated septum prevents clear breathing which in turn causes snoring. There are a few over the counter medications that can be taken to relieve the symptoms of sinus or a blocked nose.
Smoking directly affects the throat membranes, it is seriously advised that smoking is stopped if it is affecting your partners sleep. Second hand smoke may also be a reason for snoring, so take note the next time there are smokers around you.
Try a room humidifier that prevents the air from getting dry. Moist air will prevent your nose and throat membranes from getting irritated. They are available from most common shops.
If nothing seems to be working for you try snoring aids which are usually available at your local chemist. For example, a snoring pillow that is specifically designed to decrease snoring or a chin strap that covers the jaw so the mouth stays closed.
